As the year is slowly coming to a close (seriously, where did 2017 go?!), I’ve been reflecting a little on some of my most worn items of 2017. I’ve made my fair share of shopping mistakes this year, and while there’s no harm in that, I am trying to plan out any potential wardrobe additions for 2018 with a little more foresight, while still continuing to have a bit of fun. The one thing that has really struck me as being a completely game-changing style piece for me has been absolutely and everything dotty.

I don’t tend to go for too many prints; if there’s one piece of style advice that I’ve tried to heed from my mum, it’s that block colours never go out of style, and a print can look very dated pretty quickly. I only have to think back to my wardrobe once laden with colourful patterns from Karen Walker to know that the advice she was trying to impart on me made a lot of sense. But, if there’s one weakness that I seem to have discovered this year, it’s been the playful polka dot, which has been completely taking over the contents of my wardrobe.

What I love the most about polka dots? That I’ve mostly spotted them in black and white (perfect if you prefer a minimalist colour palette like myself!), and that they help to jazz up an otherwise basic outfit, which if you take a look through my outfit archives, is about 99% of my looks.

I managed to snag this gorgeous dotty cotton midi dress during the Black Friday sales, which comes with a detachable tier, that you can wear a couple of different ways with the dress. Personally, I love the way this looks as is, paired with a bamboo clutch bag and some nude coloured sandals, as I find it looks a lot less fussy.

After feeling quite bored with my style over the course of the year, incorporating something that is so simple, yet really helps to mix up my look and add a bit of playfulness and whimsy to my outfit has really transformed the way that I look at my wardrobe. I’m not afraid to experiment a little bit – within reason – and this sits right within the spectrum of my comfort zone, making the polka dot a total game-changing style piece for me this year, so much so, that I’ve been finding myself drawn to anything with a dotty print when I’m having a little browse of the shops online.

You only need to watch one of my ‘what I wear in a week’ videos, to see how much I’ve incorporated this print into my daily outfits, as I’ve found the polka dot pieces I’ve picked up work well for both the office, for a casual weekend at home, or dressed up a little bit more to wear for an evening out.

Is there a game-changing style piece that you’ve found yourself gravitating towards this year? Let me know in the comments below! x

This dress looks really good on you and is a great inspiration for the coming summer – it’s so cold right now here in the Northern Hemisphere that it’s a pleasure to see all your summer outfits!
