5 Ways to style *that* Toteme striped roll neck sweater

Five ways to style a Toteme striped Roll neck sweater

Versatility is the name of the game when adding *new* into my closet. Worth considering – if you’re hoping to do the same – is whether said piece works in at least three outfits using items you already own. Often I’ll take this one step further and try build five outfits, especially if it’s more of a splurge or statement piece. The key thing to remember to avoid purchase regret is to make sure each of these looks are representative of your actual lifestyle. Not that of your fantasy self.

One of my more recent wardrobe additions is this striped roll neck knit from Toteme (PR). Stripes are another form of kryptonite for me, and despite having a similar knit in varying iterations, I clearly couldn’t help myself. I tend to be a little more critical of items which are on the more expensive end of the spectrum. This knit, it’s a winner. Depending on the colour you go for, the composition is 100% merino or a wool-cotton blend. Mine is the later, and the yarn is thick, with a velvety plush hand feel to it. The fit is boxy and relaxed, cutting off just below my widest point. Perhaps the only niggle I have is with the sleeves; they’re long and not the most practical if you’re washing up or cooking. The wool is relatively robust though so it’s easy enough to fold them up a little. I wear the size S which is my usual size.

Being such a high contrast piece, I decided when styling it to opt for items that really leaned into that concept. So, black, and white. The reason being that the eye is naturally drawn to the stripes of the knit, and I wanted to keep it the focal point while still being visually appealing.

For the first outfit I’ve work the sweater with my Toteme jeans; these are a straight fit, but not cut too wide through the leg. I especially love the twisted seam detail. A lot of my straight leg jeans are a cropped length. This is intentional, as I often like to pair them with oversized knits, and it means I can capitalise on the proportional balance of wearing a slim fitting shoe with them (highlighting my ankles!).

Here I added in texture through the skirt. It’s a high shine faux patent, which adds a slight edginess when paired with the soft cosy vibe of the sweater. Because the silhouette is quite feminine and ladylike, I’ve leaned into that with my shoe choice. A very classic almond toe pump (and one of my favourite pairs of shoes!).

A more traditional workwear inspired outfit, pairing the roll neck with some high waisted trousers. I think you could also do a little half tuck in the front here if you wanted, but I like the visuals of the silhouette. The pants are a dark charcoal grey, which is muted and still feels harmonious and calming on the eye when scanning through the whole look.

With this fourth outfit, I’m drawing on the ecru stripe for a full two-tone look, evident also in my choice of shoes. The skirt really stands out here, and not for the fuzzy nature of the alpaca. Because it’s at opposite ends of the spectrum to the large black block at the base of the knit. It creates a striking effect, and it’s the first thing my eye is drawn to here. The shoes were a natural choice to mimic these elements of contrast; a push and pull between light and dark details.

The fifth and final outfit is definitely the most practical for me, given my current lifestyle. Pairing the knit with leggings and a flat boot. This is an easy option for when I want to be comfortable, but still feel somewhat elevated and chic. The leggings acting as an easy replacement for my beloved skinny jeans. Flat boots, great for walking in, and I really appreciate the high shaft – perfect for pairing with my straight leg jeans, too!
