Everlane modern loafer in black leather
Back in November, Everlane opened up international shipping for one week only. Not wanting to miss my opportunity to pick up a pair of their much hyped shoes, I zoned in on the Everlane modern loafer, which had caught my eye back when they initially launched.
It’s pretty safe to say that buying footwear online can be a gamble at the best of times, so I’d held off nabbing these until I knew I’d have the safety net of a returns policy, in case they didn’t fit.
Aside from the fact that these took three weeks to even be dispatched (something I put down to what I assume were an overwhelming number of international orders), I couldn’t have been more thrilled when they arrived. The quality exceeded my expectations – more on that below – and the style isn’t overtly masculine, which I put down to the narrow toe.

If I could give you one piece of advice when purchasing the Everlane Modern Loafer, it’s to size up half a size. I’m always an EU40, so opted for the US9 after doing a little research of my own, online. Turns out I really should have purchased the US9.5; the shoe itself is an incredibly narrow fit, which is far from a match made in heaven given that I was blessed with wide feet.
I’ve been attempting to stretch mine out by wearing two thick pairs of socks and painfully squeezing my feet into the loafers, and aside from cutting off a little bit of blood circulation, the leather has started to give a little. I suspect that with a little more perseverance, the overall fit will be more snug than painfully tight, but it’s definitely something I think I could have avoided if I’d gone up a half size.
For reference, the insole of the US9 measures 26.8cm long and I generally wear shoes with an insole measurement of approximately 26cm long.
Q U A L I T Y
Like all of Everlane’s other offerings, the shoes are well constructed and made with high quality materials. The leather is thick and very stiff, which seem to be atypical with man-style loafers (Bass loafers immediately come to mind). While I can’t comment on the other color options, the black leather is very matte in finish, and well-balanced with the contrasting tan sole and heel.
Generally speaking, the quality stands on its own, and is comparable to shoes in my closet that I’ve paid two or three times the amount for; needless to say, I’m looking forward to Everlane’s first foray into heels.
Overall, I’m very pleased with my purchase and am looking to eventually pick up the modern point in burgundy (sizing up half a size as per the site recommendation), which look perfect for dressing up an otherwise casual outfit. If you have any questions about the modern loafers from Everlane, then drop them down in the comments below and I’ll do my best to answer them for you. And if you’re planning to purchase a few new goodies for yourself but wanted a little bit more information, then you can check out some of my older Everlane reviews here and here.
I really like the pointed tonal flats and the rubber soled loafers.
Have you taken the loafers to the cobbler to stretch them? I’ve done that a few times and it helps.
I had the same problem with sizing :/ (we have the same size and I ordered a 9 as well…) However, I was able to have them stretched out by going to a cobbler and now they fit like a glove 🙂 You might have to take them back a few times to get the fit right but it’s definitely not impossible!
After reading your rave reviews of Everlane I picked up a pair of the sandals during their choose your own price event. It is crazy cold right now where I live, but I needed a replacement since my only pair bit the dust last summer. They are so incredibly classic and at $50 U.S. with the “sale” price affordable as well. The leather is great quality if a bit on the stiff side, but I a am hoping that after some breaking in they will be comfortable enough to trek around in all day. Thanks for introducing me to this brand since it is the classic pieces that always seem so hard to find!
I should also mention that they were true to size.

Hi April – thank you SO much for sharing your own review on the sandals. I’ve found that the leather on the loafers is softening up a little and starting to mould to the shape of my feet, so I’d imagine that your experience with the sandals will probably be the same? Glad to know they’re true to size, I might have to check them out next time I’m doing a little shop from Everlane 🙂
love those shoes! xO!
I might be thinking about picking up a pair of these to try (maybe in a few months when the weather starts warming up here). I also have wide feet though, and I wonder if the sizing might still not work for me even with sizing a half size up. (I recently had the same problem with Frye where their designs run narrow and I ultimately decided their boots just didn’t suit me as a result.) It’s good to know that the quality is very good!

I’ve found that it’s actually my right foot (sans bunion) which feels a little sore in these shoes at the toe as they stick out a little. I think if you live in the US and can easily return them, it’s worth ordering them just to see as they are such a gorgeous style. I can’t believe how good the quality is actually; looking forward to trying out some of their other shoes later this year (when the budget isn’t quite so tight!)
I have narrow feet and usually wear a US size 6. Should I still size up to a 6.5? Thanks for your input.

I think if your feet are narrow then your usual size should be okay. I got the US9 (I’m an EU40) and after wearing these in they fit perfectly so I don’t think you’ll have a problem!
I would! I have narrow feet too so I ignored the sizing up. I can wear mine fine but they are snug. Probably should have sized up.
Hi! So I just got mine in and I would agree with you that they run tight around the toes and I have fairly narrrow feet. However I can slide my heal in and out of them fairly easily (but not too easily) so it’s not the length but the width. My question is that do you think if you could go back in time would you have retuned them for a larger size so they were more like “slippers” or do you not mind them being snug as long as they don’t hurt. I would love your advice! Mine took 3 weeks too and I want to keep them so bad because I’m so excited but I would hate for my excitement to be a reason they don’t become a staple because I didn’t want to part with them lol. I’m sure we have all been there

I actually recently sold mine just as I bought a new pair of loafers (similar style to the Gucci ones), however there are a couple of notes that hopefully will help you. In hindsight, I still agree that I needed to go up a half size, so if I bought them over, I would definitely go for the US9.5 over the US9 (I’m an EU40 for reference). It took quite a while for me to break them in across the foot, where it was very narrow on my wide feet. The leather is quite stiff so can be prone to rubbing, so I think you would get some blisters regardless, though it does soften up with time, I promise! It’s hard for me to be a judge for you given you have a narrow foot, but they will relax across the foot which should give you a little bit of extra length. I hope that helps xx
Thank you so much for the detailed information. But my question is even if shoes are of the same size are very likely to be different if from different brands. I wear EU40 in NIKE and Addidas, but EU39 in Vans and Converse. Can you give me some examples of the shoes you wear EU40? Again, I really appreciate your sharing!!

Hi Chelsea, of course! I wear an EU40 in brands like: Dior, Golden Goose, Veja, Charlotte Olympia, ATP Atelier. Essentially, I’m referring to designer brand sizing (rather than sneaker sizing). HTH! 🙂
