Champagne taste on a beer budget; that’s probably how I’d best describe my wardrobe. It’s a mish-mash of contemporary or staple investment pieces, and more affordable basics. Over the years, I’ve learnt that you don’t need to break the bank to look chic or expensive. If you break down some of my favourite outfit combinations, they’re usually a mix of high/low dressing. Some of my favourite finds have been those that fall on the affordable end of the spectrum – whether it’s been from shopping pre-loved, or scouring independent brands or the high street.
Wearing Mango turtleneck top (also here), Everlane wide leg chinos, Marks & Spencer mules, Polene numero un mini bag, Mejuri earrings & ring, Nadri bracelet
Take the outfit above, for example. I’ve gone mostly to the high street with this one, pairing it with a more expensive bag. The thing that really helps to tie in the elements of the outfit is the matching neutral colour palette, and the mixed textures of ribbed knit, cotton, leather, suede and patent.
The turtleneck top I’m wearing has a great fit and looks incredibly chic, and if I didn’t tell you, you wouldn’t know it was from the high street. This was one of those wardrobe basics I felt I was missing, and I managed to find it at Mango (also here). Despite being made from a ribbed viscose, it has more of a premium feel to it.
The shoes again, are another bargain find, this time from Marks & Spencer. Mules as a trend have been around for a while, but what I really liked about these ones is that they have that square toe, which is really big at the moment. Despite being a more affordable style, I see these as being something I can reach for in the years to come, as the nude hue and simplistic design make these feel less trendy.
Finally, let’s touch on the bag. This is from Polene and is undoubtedly more of an investment piece. The quality of the materials is exceptional, and the mix of suede and leather makes it feel incredibly luxurious (a review is coming soon!). Bags are one of the areas in my wardrobe where I’m happy to spend a little more, as they tend to be items that we switch out less frequently and pair with so many more of our outfits.
01 | Only invest in the classics
While there may be the odd exception, but my first tip for high/low dress is to invest in classic staples that you’ll be reaching for time and time again. I’ll spend a bit more money on things like timeless tailoring and quality accessories, as they tend to be items I have on heavy rotation. For those spendy purchases I’ll consider the cost-per-wear and how much mileage I’ll get out it. A good trick to is think about whether the item will work with at least ten outfit variations – that’s a good indicator of a classic style right there!
02 | Opt for block colours or timeless patterns
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve received a compliment on a basic wardrobe staple, that cost miles less than its designer counterpart. As a general rule of thumb for high/low dressing, I’ve always found that clothing items in block colours and timeless patterns are more versatile, look more expensive, and generally have a longer life-span in my wardrobe. Whether I’m looking to spend or save, steering clear of print and pattern – while fun – results in a more cohesive closet with endless styling opportunities.
03 | Natural fibres are king
Cottons, linens, wool and silk; four natural materials you hear me talk about a LOT, and with good reason. Not only is it better for the environment, but a natural fibre piece will last longer and wear better than something made out of synthetic materials. It might feel like a bit of a treasure hunt if you’re on a budget, natural fibres should reign supreme whether you’re saving your pennies or splurging on a designer buy.
04 | Save on trendy designs
One of my favourite things about fashion is occasionally taking part in the trend du jour of the season. While I try to only jump on trends I see having a lasting impact in my wardrobe, I’ll usually start by saving here first, you know, just in case.
05 | Mix textures
I love adding depth to my look through different textures, and it’s here that high/low dressing really holds its own. Premium materials like wools, silks or linens add a rich element when paired with poplin cotton or viscose.
I love this entire look. It’s so chic! The bag is especially beautiful!
