It may come as a surprise, but of everything that we wear, sneakers have one of the biggest environmental footprints. The manufacturing process is energy-intensive, and many of the components are made from virgin plastic, which never break down. Not only that, but we are wearing out our sneakers at a faster rate than many of the other items we have stashed in our wardrobes, with the number of sneakers that have ended up in landfill somewhere in the billions. And one of the things I’ve been making more of an effort to do this year is shop sustainable first. So I was really excited when I heard that Everlane was launching a sneaker that’s carbon neutral. And today, I’ve teamed up with Tread by Everlane, to share three ways to style their newly launched sneakers.
What is Tread by Everlane?
Two years in the making, Tread by Everlane is the brand’s stance in their mission to create the world’s most sustainable sneaker; a shoe that is built to last, sustainably made, and 100% carbon neutral.
The sole of the shoe is 94.2% virgin-plastic free – a blend of natural rubber and post-industrial recycled rubber; the leather is sourced from Saigon TanTec which using 42% less electricity and 56% less dress water than industry peers; and the laces and lining are made from recycled polyester, a strong nod to Everlane’s commitment to cut virgin plastic from manufacturing from 2021.
Finally, the sneakers promise to be carbon neutral. The total emissions footprint for each pair of sneaker is 51.5kg CO2e; this includes every step, from cattle-rearing right through to the final stages of production. By partnering with NativeEnergy, Tread by Everlane offsets these emissions by supporting projects that reduce the impact of greenhouse gases. This includes programs that aim to improve cattle-grazing practices which will lead to cleaner waterways, better soil health and more carbon sequestration.
Sizing + Comfort
I typically take a US9.5 in Everlane shoes, however as the sneakers run a half size small, I sized up to a US10. And it’s a perfect fit.
Unlike other sneakers I’ve owned, these were a pair I didn’t have to break in. They’re not a sports trainer, but they were comfortable to walk long distances in straight off the bat. They’ve got great support and cushioning in the sole, and they’re wide-foot friendly.
Sporty meets Feminine
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of sneakers are casual vibes, so I wanted to create a bit of juxtaposition for the first outfit. I’ve paired the Tread by Everlane sneakers with a flirty floral midi dress. If you don’t have florals on hand, these sneakers would also look great with one of Everlane’s wrap dresses. It’s an unexpected look, but it’s perfectly balanced. The relaxed and chunky style of the sneaker offsets the slinky and feminine silhouette of the dress. I paired it with a simple black shoulder bag (this is a great option) to finish off the look.

Casual Tailoring
One of my favourite styling elements for the transitional season is to pair a blazer with my outfit. It’s that ‘third’ piece which ties the whole outfit together, and it adds a touch of casual tailoring to my look. Usually I’d wear my day heels or loafers with this kind of outfit, but it seemed like the perfect blank canvas to wear with sneakers. I really loved how this pairing turned out – it’s all business on the top, and play on the bottom. The trick to pulling this off is to opt for a super skinny jean. It helps to balance out the shape of the sneaker.

Go Sports Luxe
If you want to wear the sneakers a little more literally, then you could opt for a sports luxe option. Cycle shorts are really on trend at the moment, and maybe I’ve just spent a little too much time on Instagram, but I’m all for it. For my final outfit, I paired my Tread by Everlane sneakers with some cycle shorts, a men’s oversized tee (nonchalantly tucked at the waist), and an oversized blazer. I really wanted the sneakers to be the focal point of my outfit, so I went for some serious colour contrast with dark tones on my upper half, played off by the bright ecru hue of my shoes.

Thanks so much 🙂

Hi there! Yes they are really durable, haven’t had any issues with the quality at all. I’ve also got one of the newer pairs and they are super comfortable as well *while being a little more streamlined in terms of design) xx
