Day two in Sydney pretty much had the same in store for me as day one. Nothing but on-going exhaustion, sore feet, and a multitude of fashionable people. Having initially looked at my schedule to find that I had the Tuesday morning free, my first thought was “sleep in!”, although what actually occurred was the polar opposite, waking up just shy of 6am to meet a Sydney-based friend for breakfast and at that point, a much-needed caffeine hit. So much for sleeping in.
My first show of the day wasn’t until the early afternoon, beginning with Jayson Brunsdon, who this year celebrated his tenth anniversary in fashion. A mix of luxe looking silks, satins and heavily sequinned pieces were intermixed with black vinyl, and pastel floral jacquard. Brunsdon drew inspiration for his SS’14 collection, entitled ‘Obsession’, from the shapes and volumes of mid century couture.
A short walk to Newtown and a watermelon juice later, I found myself at the Manning Cartell show, whose Paddington store I had made a point of visiting earlier in the day. Modern and sleek. I don’t think I could find any two words to better describe the show, which for the most part was composed of structurally designed yet minimal pieces, alongside rich metallics, gem detailing, and cleverly designed paneling. The juxtaposition between the clean lines of the collection and the grungy unfinished look of the location, intentional or not, was a stroke of genius.
The final show I attended for the evening was most certainly the one I had been anticipating the most. Having been excited to see that Kate Sylvester was showing at MBFWA, my excitement was increased further just moments before the show began when I discovered that the theme of the SS’14 collection, ‘The Last Sitting’, explored the life of Marilyn Monroe (and yes that is a baseball with Kate Sylvester on it). Her personality, influences, and men in her life were a visibly constant theme, as looks alternated between the masculine and feminine. I’ve no doubt that those baseball hats are going to be in high demand come summertime, when it hits the top of the wishlist for all the girls in the know, myself included, regardless of how silly I look with a cap on. I couldn’t help but share a huge number of shots from Sylvester’s show, an indicator of how much I loved the collection. Ridiculously wearable, I’m already having a hard time narrowing down my favourites.
