I would have been lying if I had said I wasn’t looking forward to the Alice McCall show, with the invitation hinting at something both vibrant and truly beautiful. Official handouts described in an increasingly verbose fashion, a collection which predominantly took inspiration from the sea, and artists Ernst Haekel and Rene Jules Lalique. Surpassing any expectations I may have had, McCall’s cruise collection seemed to mimic life below the sea, in silky fabrics that glided along the runway like a jellyfish through water, in soft muted tones, with brightness coming from the intricately designed watercolour prints.
McCall’s signature cut-out details were prominent, amongst more aquatic elements which translated magnificently through ornate opalescent beading, fluid silk panels and delicately cut circular pleated jumpsuits. Mermaid references seemed to infer that the collection may contain one or two fishtail dresses, but instead what we were treated with was on another level, graceful in every sense of the word. Time to start planning that cruise…
