Wardrobe planning for my transitional wardrobe – in my case, autumn – has already begun. I’ve always like to get on the front foot, so to speak, and map things out early so I know where I stand (and what’s missing from my wishlist). And if the past year has taught me anything, it’s that shoes which I can walk miles in are indispensable. Even better if they’re cute. So, with that in mind, today I’m partnering up with Everlane to share a review of their newly launched Modern Loafer, plus three ways to style them.

Wearing Everlane chunky cardigan (size M); Everlane cheeky straight jeans (size 25 ankle); and Everlane modern loafer (size US10)

I’ve really come to embrace slightly more masculine elements in my outfits. Which was in essence what really attracted me to these shoes. Unlike their predecessor – the original Modern Loafer – these have a chunkier silhouette; a slightly more rounded toe; and a raised lip running around the top edge of the shoe. It’s details like this which make these such a fun option to style. So let’s get into the review…

EVERLANE MODERN LOAFER REVIEW

SIZING & FIT | I tend to bring this up every time I mention Everlane shoes, but on the whole I find that their sizing fits slightly on the small side, compared to other brands. For reference, I wear a US9 or EU40 in other brands, but a US9.5 in most Everlane shoe styles. For the Modern Loafer, I went up a half size and opted for the US10. And I’m glad I did as it gave me a bit more width across the foot.

If you have wide feet like me, then you’ll appreciate the extra space. In terms of the fit, I found overall that they don’t run too narrow or too wide. They’re somewhere smack bang in the middle. And despite the extra space, my heels aren’t flapping out of the loafers when I take a step. But they’re also not a chore to slip my feet in and out of, if you know what I mean.

QUALITY/WEAR & TEAR | In addition to having a chunkier silhouette to the original style, the leather on this new look loafer is also different. It’s still thick, but it’s softer as has a lot more give. So they’re much more forgiving, and break in time is minimal/non-existent. I’ve worn mine on long walks and had zero issues with rubbing or blisters. So far what I’ve noticed is that the leather has softened up a little more, and there’s some slight creasing across the toe. All normal wear and tear that you’d expect from a pair of shoes. I also just want to shout out the thicker than usual sole. Love this, and the rubberised nature of it means that you won’t have to get them re-soled in a couple months’ time. The low block heel also adds a nice height boost too.

THREE WAYS TO STYLE THEM

OUTFIT 1 | CREATING BALANCE
I talked about how to balance out proportions in a recent post, and I’m essentially going to be stealing elements for this first way to style the Everlane Modern Loafer. The silhouette is chunky with a nice block heel, and I really wanted to lean into that. So I used proportions to put together my outfit. On my lower half, I wore my Way High Jeans (also from Everlane), which have a wide leg, complemented by the chunky shoe. To compensate for the relaxed shape of the jeans and chunky nature of the shoes, I went for a slim fitting top.

The other way I balanced out the outfit was through colour. I love monochrome – and more on that next – but I wanted to add some visual interest. The shoes to me feel like a stand out piece, so I chose to highlight this. My top, jeans and bag are all black, which allowed the shoes to really take centre stage and shine.

OUTFIT 2 | GO MONOCHROME
My next style trick is an oldie but a goodie. Go monochrome. This is a fail-safe styling tool that I use regularly, as I love how elevated a simple outfit can be made just through slightly different tones. I opted for the Modern Loafers in the shade “camel”, which is a rich toffee caramel hue. So for my monochrome look, I drew on some beige-toned faves, in different textures. That is the key to any monochrome outfit. You create depth and dimension through the use of texture. The alpaca knit (a must-have for sure!), mock croc bag, and cotton twill jacket are all visually interesting to look at, and combined with the shoes, are what make this outfit.

OUTFIT 3 | ELEVATED LOUNGEWEAR
The reality for many of us is that we’re living almost entirely in our homes. And that means that loungewear is often what we’ve got on heavy rotation. So what better way to elevate your loungewear, than to add a special pair of shoes? I love this as stylistically it can totally change the way you feel about your loungewear. But it’s also practical if you have to nip out – no need to change; maybe just throw on a jacket and you’re good to go. Again, you’ll notice that shape is another key element here. This time, mixing soft with “hard” features. The soft being the pillowy, slouchy silhouette of the loungewear, and the hard being the sculptural elements of the loafers. I love how these pair together so effortlessly!

So that’s my thoughts on Everlane’s reimagining of their classic Modern Loafer and three (very) different ways you can style them. If you have any questions I haven’t answered then let me know down in the comments below.

And thanks so much to Everlane for partnering with me on this post!

Maybe these will grow on me, but first impressions are the original design looked more….modern, and flattering, I think? Must be the toe shape. I’d love to see them in one of the lighter colors.

Hi Cathy, so sorry for the delayed response – we’ve been battling gastro and viral bugs for the past couple of weeks. The original design was slimmer so from the perspective of more flattering, I’d say yes for sure. But they were SO uncomfortable for me, especially with wide feet so these have been a welcome addition to my closet. You can definitely have a bit more fun with styling with these too – seeing as the chunkiness is pretty unexpected and masculine! 🙂
