I wanted to start the week by sharing a couple of recent outfits. Despite my best intentions to try and blog here regularly, it’s been challenging trying to balance out working full time, caring for an (almost) 18-month old, and running a small business. Free time has been at a bit of a premium.
Week 10 of our lockdown, and I’m continuing my efforts to “get dressed” every single day. It’s reinforced a shift in how I put together my outfits; dressing for me rather than for others. A bad habit that crept in during my teens, lingering throughout all of my twenties.
Wearing The Curated blazer; H&M trousers; Alexander McQueen belt; Charles & Keith bag; Porte & Paire boots; Linjer earrings and necklaces
So, starting with the first outfit. I’ve been playing around with proportions a lot recently. More notably for me, how accessories can truly shape that. Here, using a recent purchase – the Alexander McQueen double buckle belt – to achieve that. Blazers tend to feel more formal, but in lightweight wools they have this sense of ease to them which I find works well even in casual settings.
The boots being a key winter purchase for me, and again another piece that I’ve been encouraged by when putting together an outfit. I especially love how they pair with straight leg pants. The fitted shaft makes this look quite flattering. Plus the combination of leather with knitted fabric adds dimension. The bag was where I added in that much needed colour; a great dupe for the Christian Dior bobby bag if I ever did see one.
Wearing H&M oversized stripe knit; Commando leggings; Tods loafers; Polene numero onze bag; Monica Vinader earrings
Admittedly it’s this second outfit which is more appropriate for our days spent at home. Comfortable, but put together; details being key here. An oversized striped knit is the hero. One of those wardrobe staples that I’ve found myself relying on time and time again. A striped top is almost always going to work, and while it might be simple, it’s a nice way to play with contrast.
I don’t know if this is a side effect of the pandemic, or just a result of a trend creeping into my closet, but I succumbed to leggings earlier in the year. And promptly found myself wondering why I hadn’t owned a pair sooner. Mine are from Commando, and are as good as you’ve heard. I personally prefer wearing leggings like this with oversized knits or tees. The kind which go past the hips, even if only just. To balance out the silhouette, I opted for a chunky loafer. Not only does the chain across the vamp add some visual appeal through adornment, but the bulkier shape looks great paired with the slim silhouette through the leg.
It’s a little hard to see, but I accessorised solely with a pair of earrings of green onyx. I’ve been experimenting a lot more with colour of late, and bright gemstone jewellery pieces have felt like a natural way to add in some vibrancy; especially when wearing a monochromatic outfit like this one.
