Radio silence the past couple of weeks aside – life just got in the way – I thought it was time I shared this very belated spring outfit, which I wore earlier in the month. This quite elegant pairing came at a time when I’d been feeling like my outfits had been lacking excitement. Fine, but to me they felt lacklustre. As though something was missing. Perhaps the joy of experimenting with style. Playing with proportion and shape in a way that personally seems interesting. Utilising textures that aren’t “cosy” to reflect the change in season.
Wearing RAEY vest (on sale); Marle skirt (shorter alternative here); By Far mules; O My Bag bucket bag (10% off with MADEMOISELLE10); Marni ear cuff (sold out but I LOVE this affordable alternative)
There’s one thing this outfit is seriously giving me; length. Visually, I’ve created this illusion that I’m incredibly tall, which is all down to how this outfit has been constructed. You can see a very clear column of colour, which draws the eye down without any breaks. This creates a nice long line. Even my shoes are dark, and despite the little peek of skin at the ankles, this doesn’t stunt my appearance. My jacket has exaggerated shoulders which has “weight”, but it sits high up and doesn’t drag the outfit down, as the skirt I’ve worn is fluid and has movement. Cinching in the belt high up on my natural waist also helps to play into the rule of thirds and create the type of proportion I like.
Texturally, it’s not flat either. There’s the smooth cotton, that luminescent slinky silk, the soft suede, and the shiny richness of the mock croc leather bag.
For me this outfit was about how I felt in the clothes. Not necessarily how I looked. That said, having natural harmony helps to keep things from seeming “off” to the eye. I’ve been having these conversations with friends more and more these days. About the way we want to wear our clothes. Not abiding by traditional rules, and instead thinking about how what we wear serves us. Whether it’s a new silhouette, the utility of the design or fabric, or a twist to the actual styling. I’m not sure if this shift in mindset is just a sign of my age (leaning into what we love and less of what we don’t), or whether that’s just the climate we’re in from a styling perspective. Would be curious to know what you think in the comments! x
