Carrying on from my last post about investing in your wardrobe, today I wanted to share some black style essentials that form the backbone of my own closet. Getting the basics nailed is half the equation of pulling together a chic outfit, and it helps that head to toe monochrome always looks effortless.
Wearing Atmos & Here black tank, Citizens of Humanity jeans, Vince cardigan (old but similar here), Isabel Marant heels (old but similar here), Celine trotteur bag, Mejuri earrings, Muru Jewellery necklace, Missoma necklace, Gold bangle (old but similar here)
Many of my day-to-day outfits end up having some black-hued element to them; these pieces are the go-with-everything, fail-safe staples I can rely on and will look good no matter what I pair them with. So let’s kick off my must-have list of black style essentials with my ultimate favourite… black-wash denim.
black style essentials
Well-fitting jeans | If you know me well, then you’ll know that barely a day goes by during the colder months where I’m not wearing my faded black Dr Denim skinnies. These are practically superglued onto my body for those easy days where I want something comfortable, that’s flattering, and teams up well with all my tops. These aren’t a true black, but I feel like that’s part of their charm.
Basic tee | Close cut, slim fitting or boxy and oversized, you really can’t go wrong with a basic black tee. I’ve been wearing mine a lot as layering pieces over autumn and winter. These are a style hero on their own – worn just with jeans or a skirt – and a simple addition of a blazer or cardigan can instantly transform the vibe. My only rule? It has to be 100% cotton.
The wear-with-everything blazer | One of the unsung heroes of my wardrobe is definitely a good blazer. It’s that vital third piece which instantly elevates a look, and a total classic at that. I’ve got two styles; single breasted, and a more open double breasted option.
A sleeveless tank | I quickly learned upon moving to Sydney that a sleeveless tank was a must during summer. Something in silk that’s a bit more dressed up works for the office, while a cotton one will keep you cool during your downtime.
Cropped trousers | When I’m not slipping into a pair of jeans, I like to alternate with a pair of high waisted trousers, preferably cropped just above the ankle to give the illusion of extra height. For an affordable option, the EZY pant from Uniqlo is fantastic. If you’ve got the budget to splurge, these ones from Joseph are gorgeous.
A snuggly sweater | It’s little secret how much I love cosy knit sweaters. Anything oversized and warm is such a must in my closet during the colder months. If it’s cashmere, even better. Another one where I’ve got two basic styles which really sort me out; a simple cashmere crew, and a big oversized turtleneck.
Leather skirt | You’ll probably sense that coming off the back of winter, I’m still in a cosy frame of mind. And a leather mini, paired with a big oversized knit is one of my favourite transitional season outfits. You don’t have to spend a fortunate to get the look either. The high street often have cute options, you could go faux, or you could look pre-loved like I did.
Black court shoes | When in doubt, I find myself reaching for a pair of black court shoes, without fail. I’ve got a couple of heel heights (low and high), so that keeps me covered regardless of occasion. I personally adore suede shoes, but you could go for leather, faux, or patent depending on your preferences. An ultimate wardrobe workhorse, and a must if you work in a corporate office.
Streamlined leather tote | Of all my black style essentials, this is probably the one I reach for the most; a simple streamlined leather tote bag. The one I bought is from Cuyana. It has contrast blush lining, and I love that the silhouette isn’t too floppy. I’ve done a full review here if you’d like to have a read. If you want something a little more structured, I do love Linjer’s classic tote (plus it has a magnetic closure), or for an even slouchier option, Everlane recently launched a new tote bag in pebbled leather which is super dreamy (review coming next week…!).
Those are nine black style essentials I think are worth having in your closet. If you wanted to round it up to ten, a simple LBD is a classic too! Would love to know what your must-haves are… x
Thank you!! What are your thoughts on the new glove boot reknit from Everlane?

Hi Liv, I personally really liked the look of them – was tempted to actually get them this month but I’ve already got a few pairs of black boots and seeing as I’m headed into summer, it didn’t make much sense. I have the day glove reknit shoes and they are the COMFIEST shoes I own, hands down. They have give to them which is nice, and there is no digging in like I got with the leather pair, so if the boots are anything similar, I’d say they will be lovely to wear. My only bug bear with the style is that it isn’t super fitted around the ankle. I feel like that would have been slightly more flattering? Otherwise, I love the look of them and I think they’d be a good winter boot (just not one I’d get wet!) x
I love your blog and have looked at it occasionally for a few years. I always feel inspired, but not overwhelmed, by your content. You turned me onto Everlane and Cuyana awhile ago, and I have several of their bags.
I promise I am not affiliated with them, but wonder if you have tried anything from Amour Vert? Would love to see a review on their items if you find them interesting.

Hi Liz, thank you so much. I hope over the years it’s given you some ideas on how to remix your wardrobe 🙂
Amour Vert has been on my radar for a while now. I think I used to own one of their striped tees back when I lived in Wellington actually. I’d love to try one of their long sleeved bretons though – will add it to my list xx
