I’ve been reflecting a little on my autumn/winter style. Analysing my most worn. Distilling it down into a few neat outfit formulas. Noticing that the combination of each outfit was so formulaic, to the point that only small subtleties differentiate between them.

The width of a trouser (or denim) leg. Low heeled pumps or a covered up boot; sometimes even a sandal if the weather permitted. A blazer or not. Loose-fitting outerwear, belted at the waist, in wool or cotton gabardine. Full monochrome, tonal, or colour; intentionally worn to create shape through “blocks”.
The irony of trying to “re-find” my personal style for much of 2020 isn’t lost on me. Something I believe I’ve mentioned previously. Especially when I consider that I’ve ended up almost right back where I started. Perhaps with a more casual bent.
Spending the last three months in lockdown, has made me realise another shift in how I dress. Instead of dressing for others, I’m consciously dressing for me. Making an effort to put on a low heeled sandal or boot, despite knowing that my only excursion out of the house might be a brisk walk around the block.
Part of what I’ve always loved about fashion, is the ability to express yourself through what you wear. For some, it’s more overt. Loud and colourful. The types of outfits which are striking, and bursting with personality. Others may have more of a quiet slant. Subtle. More utilitarian and practical. A uniform, of sorts. It’s a spectrum of course, and for myself I’ve found it interesting to see my own style slide along it. From expressive prints and bold silhouettes, to something softer and more simple. Neither are representative of good or bad style; just different.
Going back to my most worn items – something I’ll share in due course. Unsurprising to me was just how classic they all leaned. Combined, they created something of a mini capsule. Seamlessly working back with one another, reinforcing their position as something of a staple in my closet. It’s almost cartoonish how these same items pop up season after season without recourse. My wardrobe reflecting my true style preferences, which after years of chatting personal style, seem well ingrained. And perhaps, require little introduction at this point.
It’s underlined that at this point in time, there are seldom – if any – gaps in my existing wardrobe. All the basics are nailed down. It’s now a matter of satisfying shifts in taste; fleeting as they may be. While I know the perfect wardrobe doesn’t exist, I’d say my A/W “capsule” is about as closet to it as I’ll ever get, at this point in time.
