What a trip! Days later and I’m still buzzing from my recent stay in Dallas, for the annual LTKCon. For me, it wasn’t just a week getting to learn, network, and connect with new people, but also some time to fill my cup. If you’re a mum you’re probably well familiar with putting yourself last on the pecking order. Safe to say I’m hugely grateful that my husband pushed me to go.
So, first step in deciding what to pack? Checking the weather forecast and also the schedule. The forecast was around 30-32 deg C every day during my stay, and I was packing for some exploring, but mostly conference sessions, meetings and evening cocktail events. Anxiety over losing my suitcase in transit got the better of me so I packed carry on only (it was a squeeze!). And, I was limited mostly to black and white basics as most of my clothing is currently in storage.
MY DALLAS TRAVEL CAPSULE
Here’s a look at what made it into my suitcase. Keep in mind that this also includes my plane outfit (always wear your bulkiest items during transit!). Still a little surprised I managed to stash all this in my carry-on. For those curious, the suitcase I took was this one from JULY.

WHAT I’M GLAD I PACKED
Basic singlets. My Everlane denim shorts. These sandals from Jil Sander (unbelievably comfortable). A linen shirt.
All these items have one thing in common. They’re good basics. Because my capsule was almost entirely black and white, I had endless mix and match opportunities. This served me so well as I wasn’t limited to outfit combinations that I’d put together at home during the planning phase. Without a mirror, might I add!
One of the other key points of note about my Dallas travel capsule is that I went with natural fibres. A seriously good move given it was 30 deg C (or hotter) every single day. But equally, the mornings were cool, so to have a layering item – whether it be an oversized shirt, a sweatshirt, or a blazer – were key when dashing out for my morning dose of caffeine.
I do think that a lightweight cardigan probably would have served me well on this trip. But, not having one wasn’t a dealbreaker.
WHAT COULD HAVE STAYED AT HOME
There were really just two items that I could have happily left at home; the ACOC green bag (which I didn’t wear once!), and the grey Tibi sandals. Let me explain.
The bag was brought along with good intentions. Being fabric, it didn’t take up too much space, and I’d thought it’d be a great way to add in some actual colour. I vlogged the trip so needed to be able to carry my camera with me, in addition to phone, passport, wallet and lipstick. The size really prohibited that, plus I worried that my favourite lippie might slip out, which would be just my luck.
Shoes are generally a weak spot for me when it comes to shopping, and clearly when it comes to packing too. I took five pairs with me to Dallas, which on reflection seems excessive. The Tibi Ola’s got one outing, and on reflection could have easily been substituted for the glitzy Isabel Marant heels I’d packed. I think I was after something with a bit more chill, and had thought maybe I’d wear them during the day too. A reminder that when travelling, I’m probably not going to wear heels unless the occasion calls for it.
Looking over what I actually packed, I wore almost everything. I think aside from the ACOC bag and one singlet, the only other items that didn’t get worn was this tee from Sezane and this twisted sweetheart strapless top. Surprising given how many pieces made it into my carry-on, but the purpose of the trip and various events called for multiple outfit changes a day. Something that wouldn’t be necessary if I was headed somewhere on holiday (as opposed to a working trip).
