During my Sunday shopping scroll, I stumbled across a bag too good to gatekeep. Just like the rest of the internet, I seem to be somewhat consumed by The Row’s minimal aesthetic. I can pinpoint my own fascination with the Olsen’s back to my pre-teen days. The era of Full House, Two of a Kind, and New York Minute (iconic!). And honestly, this video of their very first 2006 collection – a seven item capsule – still lives rent free in my head. And while the Olsens didn’t invent “wardrobe basics”, the twins seem to have a knack for “perfecting” the idealised minimalist designs of the 90s.
As chic as their minimally designed collections are, the prices might leave you in a bit of a head spin. Last time I checked, their hugely popular Margaux Tote was retailing for more than $10K (AUD). So you can imagine my surprise and delight when I stumbled across this compact shoulder bag with cylindrical features and sleek design. A dead ringer for The Row 90s bag, though I think I might like this affordable alternative a little better as the adjustable strap appears to be a little longer.
And listen, I’m not sure if it’s the fact that this bag is constantly popping up in my feed – hi exposure theory! – but this strikes me as an object of desire; an item to covet. The sort of bag Carolyn Besette-Kennedy might be seen toting around if she were still here today.
It helps that the Facade Pattern iteration is not only less than 1/7th the price, but the resemblance is striking.
