A quick look at my “shoe-drobe” and you’d come to the following conclusion; I love a good pointed toe shoe. So much so, that over the past few years, they’ve become a huge part of my style uniform. They’re effortlessly chic, easily dress up a casual outfit, and visual elongate the legs. So when I saw the new Everlane 40-Hour Flat was launching in February, I got pretty excited.

1: Country Road cardigan (also love this one); Karen Walker skirt (old but this is cute); Everlane 40-Hour Flat

2: Babaa no17 knit sweater (similar luxe option here); J Brand skinny jeans (also here); Everlane 40-Hour Flat; Everlane mini form bag

3: Staple Superior black knit sweater; Reformation skinny jeans; Everlane 40-Hour Flat; Everlane mini day tote; Missoma necklace (worn as a bracelet)

I got quite a few DM’s over on Instagram the moment these were released – safe to say you all know just how much I loved a pointy toe flat. Now that I’ve had a good chance to break them in, I wanted give an overview of my thoughts.

SIZING & FIT

Shoes can be tricky to buy online. Is the outer fabric soft and malleable or stiff and sturdy? Does it fit true to size or run small? Will it work for wide feet or best for those with a narrow foot? So it’s little surprise one of my most asked questions about Everlane has to do with the fit of their shoes. For reference, I wear a US9.5 in Everlane shoes, an EU40 in designer shoes, and an AU9 or US9 in other brands like Tony Bianco, Marc Fisher, or Sam Edelman.

Originally, I requested the Everlane 40-Hour Flat shoes in my usual Everlane shoe size – US9.5 – but they were a bit snug. I have wide feet and a bunion on my left foot, so decided to go up a half size to a US10. The fit was much better. It might be worth noting that pointed toe shoes can fit a little narrower. I have chatted with a few others on sizing, and it looks like if you have a narrow foot, your usual size should fit well. If you’re wide-footed like me, go up a half size to accommodate.

QUALITY

The first thing I noticed straight out of the box was just how supple and soft the leather is. It’s relatively thin, and has a moldable quality to it. The leather on the Everlane 40-Hour Flat is smooth, with a subtle grain to it. Like the Everlane Day Glove, these have a rubber sole, which removes bulk and weight from the shoes. Basically, it makes them feel very light on your feet.

I’ve been alternating between both the black and nude versions since they arrived, and have been impressed with how they’ve worn so far. Despite being a smooth leather, they haven’t gotten any scratches. Small marks can easily be buffed out using the oils from your fingers. The toe hasn’t scuffed (I put this down to the design – more on this soon), and the only real sign of wear is a bit of creasing at the vamp.

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I really love the rubber soles on Everlane shoes. While it doesn’t add a lot of support, it wears incredibly well (and is pretty comfortable too).

DESIGN

I really don’t think you can go wrong with a pointed toe flat. I’ve mentioned many times in the past that this style of shoe creates a visual illusion that makes your legs look longer; particularly when wearing monochromatic outfits, or if you opt for the nude hue.

The toe on the Everlane 40-Hour Flat is slightly squared off, which is a bonus as it means it’s less prone to scuffing. This is a common bug bear with pointy shoes, and it’s good to know it’s less of an issue with this style. There’s a pull tab on the heel to assist with slipping these on. Admittedly, I could do without this. I found that on the nude pair, it did rub a little initially (no problems with the black ones though).

The rubber sole adds to the lightweight feel of the shoe, while making them practical to wear under slippery conditions as they’ve got grip. If you need support in your shoes however, and have your heart set on these, I’d recommend sizing up a half size in order to add an inner sole insert in.

Overall, it’s a classic design, and one that looks incredibly chic no matter what you pair it with.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THE EVERLANE 40-HOUR FLAT SHOES?

Some of my most worn shoes over the years have come from Everlane. I’m all for basics, and the launch of the 40-Hour Flat is one I was hotly anticipating. And I’m yet to be disappointed.

They’ve become a go-to, even just when lazing around the house as the soft leather makes them incredibly comfortable to just slip on. They pair well with my mini skirts, denim, trousers and even sweat pants. While I work from home these days, this is the style of shoe I would wear in a heartbeat to the office, on my off-days when I didn’t feel like popping on heels.

I love the rubber sole; it adds an additional sense of lightness, and makes these a good option for travel (when we can again), particularly if you’re after a pair that not only pack down well, but are comfy too.

As I mentioned earlier, sizing is the only tricky thing with this style. If you have wide feet like me, I recommend going up a half size from your usual in Everlane shoes. If you have narrow or normal width feet, you should be fine with your usual size.

Do let me know if you have any other questions in the comments section below. If you’ve been considering this style, I hope you found this post useful! x

Please note that while these shoes were kindly gifted to me, I was under no obligation to write this post. For further transparency I do want to mention that I have been collaborating with Everlane on a monthly basis, however this review is not part of that partnership nor was I compensated in any way for sharing my thoughts.

I’ve got the editor flat sling backs and was wondering how the sizing compares to this? I had to switch a couple of sizes for the sling backs till I got it right.

Hi Lily, sorry for the delayed response. I wear a US9.5 in the editor slingback flats (also have the same size in the heeled version which I personally think fit more snugly than the flat ones), and I got these half a size up. If you have narrow feet, I’d go for the same size you have the editor slingbacks in. I have wide feet and found I needed just a touch more room across the vamp. Hope that helps! x
