As a little bit of a follow up to my post last week, where I shared some of my favourite picks from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, I wanted to narrow it down to my top five, and expand on why they’re worth the investment in your wardrobe. As you know, I tend to focus a lot on the classics, but I still like to get them on sale where I can. I consider myself a pretty shrewd shopper (for the most part, at least), and I think if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, this is such a great chance to start looking at developing your autumn/winter wardrobe a little early – trust me when I say the seasons will start to change before you even know it!
To make this a little more well-rounded, I’m going to be sharing a little bit of style inspiration for each piece. Part of how I consider my new wardrobe additions, is to think about how I want to be wearing my clothing for the season ahead, and I also find that Pinterest is a great resource and tool to use to help refine those ideas.
01 | Vince Cashmere Oversize Sweater
After splurging on a nice wool sweater from Joseph earlier this year, I’ve become even more convinced that it’s really worth it to invest in your knitwear. Cashmere is a major autumn/winter staple of mine (you know how much I love my Everlane cashmere); it feels really luxurious, plus it’s super soft and cosy – two things that are a must for any winter knit. Vince is a brand that I’ve only really started to explore this year, but I’ve been incredibly impressed with the quality and the cut of the items I’ve tried so far. I really loved this oversized cashmere sweater from Vince, which comes in a creamy camel hue, in addition to a rich burgundy, if you prefer something a little deeper in colour. I really like the oversized boxy style, and long sleeves – it looks just like the kind of sweater I want to be wearing on super cold days, tucked into some tailored trousers or a high waisted leather skirt. It’s $120 (USD) off retail, which I think is pretty good value for money.
02 | Trina Turk Double Breasted Wool Coat
A good coat is something that you’ll have for years, which is why it tends to be something I’m inclined to spend a little more on, especially if it’s the only coat you’re going to be reaching for all season. I’ve amassed a few great quality options over the years, and they all have one common thread: they’re primarily fabricated with natural fibres. Think wool, cotton or cashmere. I’ve seen a couple of really nice styles in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but the ones that have really made me want to pull the trigger have sat on the spendy end of the spectrum. My top pick is this lovely mid-grey double breasted style midi coat from Trina Turk. It’s made from 100% wool, is a slightly oversized style (perfect for smuggling big sweaters underneath), and the double breasted design means that even worn open, the lapels will cover most of your body as you walk. Being grey, it’s a great neutral, though the check print adds some extra to the style and is what makes it really special.
03 | Maggy London Polka Dot Midi Dress
My work wardrobe is usually the last thing that I want to have to shop for, which is probably ironic given I’m at the office five days of the week, but I feel like sale time is usually a great opportunity to pick up something cute for work, that won’t necessarily break the bank. I always like to look for basic styles that have a twist; I like a little bit of whimsy with my wardrobe staples, and this polka dotted midi dress from Maggy London ticks all the boxes. It’s a style that I think could easily take you from office to the bar, and also transition from spring/summer to autumn/winter due to the versatile cut. It nips in at the waist and has a floaty skirt, plus the slit isn’t too risqué for the office. For winter, I’d pair this with some black tights, black leather ankle boots, and a classic blazer or waterfall cardigan, and during the summer I’d wear it on its own with a little block sandal.
04 | Marc Fisher Studded Chelsea Boots
No winter wardrobe is complete without a classic pair of boots, and one of my favourite pairs just has to be my ‘yale’ boots from Marc Fisher. These are an excellent dupe for the Acne Studios jensen boots in terms of both quality and design, delivering at a fraction of the price. I was pretty thrilled to see that they’ve released the boot in an updated design. The studded detail around the elasticated panel, the the scalloped stitching across the front of the shoe give it a slightly Western vibe – aside from being the perfect option for winter, I feel like these would be great worn at a festival too!
05 | Halogen Double Breasted Blazer & Slim Trouser Suit
Okay so this isn’t technically one piece, but I loved this little suit combo so much that I had to include it. I’ve been on the hunt for a nice longline navy pinstripe or check blazer for a while, and I really love the simplicity of this option from Halogen. I’ve been quite inspired by the Scandinavian-style aesthetic which pairs classic suiting with sneakers; it’s so nonchalant and effortless, yet can still look really elegant and chic when paired with the right accessories. I think that the blazer looks gorgeous paired with the matching pinstripe trousers from Halogen, but what I like most about a two-piece set like this is that they can be interchanged pretty easily with the rest of your wardrobe, assuming you’ve gone for a classic style. I’m envisioning the blazer worn with a simple tee and slim fitting washed black jeans, and I feel like the trousers would look great with an oversized sweater and my Stella McCartney Edith Coat (affordable option here).
Let me know in the comments what you decided to pick up!
