A visual mid-week reminder of why I put so much emphasis on finding the good kind of basics. There’s nothing mind-blowing about this outfit; it’s as simple as anything, but feels wholly representative of who I am. Without feeling boring (from my perspective anyway – and how you feel in your clothes is really key here).

Maximising versatility has been woven into (almost) all of my purchase decisions. Can I wear it for multiple occasions? Will it translate easily from work to weekend? Will it be easy to style back with existing items in my wardrobe? It’s something that I’m considering even more carefully as I slowly reach the mid-way point of my low buy. With a toddler in tow four days a week, I’ve felt less inclined to have just one of something; I’m lucky if my jeans make it through two wears before they’re covered in something sticky. A far cry from the wardrobe I was desperate to curate within an inch of its life in my early twenties. Ultimately, another reason why keeping an open mind about the fluidity and transience of your wardrobe is key.
So, here’s a handful of my favourites all in one look. The expensive striped tee (this is an option which won’t break the bank); I love that this is in black and white as it adds real contrast, and feels a little less stereotypically Parisian. The lived in jeans (old but I love the wash on these ones); comfortable and practical for day to day, in a light blue wash which looks universally good with my entire closet. The oversized black blazer; a staple I’ve owned a good few years now, and is a quick trick to smarten up a simple outfit. Then there’s accessories. Finishing touches to your outfit which in of themselves can transform the look.
