Hard working basics

Minimalist style Parisian chic outfit singlet with jeans

Instead of wrapping up the week with a “weekly wishlist”, I thought I’d share this recent outfit that I posted on my Instagram. I’ve made little secret of my newfound appreciation for more relaxed silhouettes, and this completely goes against the grain of that. So much of how I build an outfit right now has been focused around creating balance. Mixing proportions is my preferred way of doing this, as I also favour more of a muted colour palette. Yet despite not having the fundamental proportional components my eye is drawn to, I absolutely love this outfit.

I guess, in part, we’re often told that key to “good” style is wearing slim or fitted items with elements that have more volume. A simple trick to have up our sleeves that works in practice almost always. And I’m definitely guilty of having shared this advice in the past. Though at this stage in my style journey, I feel instead a sense of openness for possibilities, outfit combinations, and how to wear things. Less inclined to say “never”, instead realising in that moment the more accurate answer is “not right now”.

I suppose what I’m trying to say is, there’s no simple formula for what makes a good outfit. Or what combination will make you feel good. And this is part of the fun of putting together an outfit in the morning. Besides, style is subjective and ever-changing. What my eye is drawn to, yours might not be. And vice versa.

Zeroing in on a few of the hardest working basics in my closet; we have the white tank with cutaway detail, the slim tapered jean, a two-tone pump, and a quilted bag for “texture”. Really, there’s not much to it. And the key thing I’m reminded of when I look at this photo is not only how much I adore the individual components, but how naturally and effortlessly they pair together.

Wishing you all the best for the weekend ahead. And if you’re not yet subscribed to my YouTube channel, you might like to do so; my next video will be centred all around styling hacks that are useful for everyday so you can truly maximise your closet.
