How I “dress up” these days

I haven’t found many excuses to get dressed up over the last 12 months. COVID. Lockdown. Far from family. A new baby. Slower routines. A sartorial casualness which has crept into every outfit I put on. Flats over heels – almost everyday. Slip on slides which I can kick off under the table. A penchant for denim, no matter the occasion. Lifestyle really has been the ultimate driver of my personal style.

And it’s these cues that have guided how I dress up, when there is an occasion. So when we went out over the weekend to enjoy a tasting menu for my birthday, I found myself opting for an outfit which would be equally appropriate for a day at the beach. Just switch up the shoes.

Black’s the obvious choice with a messy (almost) toddler to contend with. The aforementioned slip on slides make their appearance. My way to dress them up? A low block heel. Of course. Then as the dress has a bohemian feel to the silhouette, a straw bag felt like the perfect match. And in three words; casual, effortless, and breezy.
