There’s no doubt that my style has a lot of European influences. Over winter, I draw a lot of inspiration from the Danes and Swedes; oversized relaxed separates in muted tones. But all year round, you can’t beat a good classic, and this is where that nod to Parisian style comes in. There’s a certain air of effortlessness and nonchalance that French women seem to have. Like they threw on an outfit and then rushed out the door, when in fact, every single detail is considered. So I thought today for a bit of fun, I’d share the tips on how to dress like a Parisian that I regularly incorporate into my own outfits.

It’s all about the classics
Take a look at any French wardrobe style guide, and you’ll notice that every single “must-have” piece is a classic. Items you probably have in your wardrobe already. Style is less trend-focused; every element is considered. Staples like a great pair of jeans, cotton tees, leather trousers, heels you can walk miles in, oversized knitwear, slim-fitting mini skirts and a trench coat are serious wardrobe workhorses.
Have a style uniform
One thing that French style always comes back to, is the idea of wearing a style uniform. Having a specific look that you reach for, rather than aimlessly following trends. Know the shapes and silhouettes that work for you, and stick to a signature look.
Stripes forever
When it comes to French style, it doesn’t get more iconic that the breton stripe top. I mean, the marinere was initially worn by the French navy, and today, it’s a much loved basic worn by both men and women alike. I personally prefer a striped top that has a bit of heft to it. A substantial cotton which looks great worn loose or tucked in at the waist. While you could do a bit of simple print mixing, the key to wearing stripes like a Parisian is to make it the focal piece of the outfit. Petit Bateau and Saint James are two iconic French brands that have nailed the mariniere. I also love KULE’s take on the striped shirt.
Keep logos to a minimum
One thing I’ve observed is that the French tend to be quite discreet about wearing labels. Perhaps it’s considered in bad taste, but rather than letting the labels do the talking, Parisian women let their clothes speak for themselves. It’s all in how you wear something, not what you’re wearing.
Dressed up casual
A key element of Parisian style is the pairing of sophisticated, elevated pieces, with laid back staples. Throwing in a dressy element to more casual outfits, or a casual element to more dressed up looks. So an embellished shoe or fancy flats worn with jeans (like I’m wearing), or sneakers thrown on with a slip dress and blazer.
