Lipsticks on a tray

These lip crayons have been rattling around in my drawer for a couple of months now, and I thought it was high time I finally shared my thoughts. A full review, along with swatches of the seven shades [PR] that I have. So, let’s review the Laura Mercier Petal Soft Lipstick Crayon.

First I think it’s apt to talk about my lipstick preferences, as that definitely colours how I look at a product. I love blurry, watercolour-like finishes that don’t require much precision. Something that is easily applied without a mirror, and has this blotted, semi-transparent effect.

This concept of a lip crayon isn’t new. My first foray into this type of lip product was a “drugstore” brand – Revlon – when I was first exploring the world of beauty in my early twenties. I loved the ease, portability, and carefree nature of them; a great option for a sheer wash of colour.

And the Laura Mercier Petal Soft Lipstick Crayon is exactly that. It genuinely feels effortless, and the colour can be built up depending on the level of intensity you desire (within the scope of a watercolour, blurred lip tint). Infused with Raspberry Seed Oil and Mango butter, it feels soft and nourishing on the lips despite having a matte finish. I do find there’s almost a smooth, silicone-like presence when I rub my lips together.

Application is easy; it doesn’t drag on the lips or look streaky. And it gives that blotted, just kissed, bitten lips. The way that it adheres to the vermillion border has this imperfectly perfect blurred effect which looks natural. As someone who leans on sheer lipsticks like this to breathe life into my (very) dull, cool-toned lips, this is an easy option.

I don’t get close to the promised 12-hour wear time, especially if I’m drinking or nibbling away at food a lot. For a soft, sheer lipstick like this, I wouldn’t expect that level of durability.

The colour range is pretty expansive, with 20 shades ranging from tawny nudes to magenta pinks. I have seven colours from the range. From left to right: 360 Agnes (a pinky coral), 361 Alma (a red coral); 362 Leonie (an orange coral); 363 Adele (a bright warm coral); 380 Sienna (an orange red); 381 Chloe (a warm red); and 382 Laura (a plum red).

One thing that’s probably quite evident from the swatches, is that a number of the shades do look quite similar on the lips. This is down to the sheer quality of these lip crayons, and will also be impacted by the undertone and pigmentation level of your lips.

The Laura Mercier Petal Soft Lipstick Crayon retails for $42 AUD or $28 USD.
