It’s funny how a few key pieces can totally transform a wardrobe, and your take on your personal style. My own style journey has been in a constant state of flux the last 18 months, as I’ve found myself trialling a few fashion hits, and some style misses. While I’ve learnt that shopping to mask periods of stress and insecurity doesn’t do my wallet or my closet any favours, it has helped me to more clearly define what I do and what I don’t like, while having the added benefit of seeing me broaden the colour spectrum of my closet, even if only a little.
Joseph oversized knit sweater (also love this one), Dr Denim skinny jeans (alternative here and here), Mute by JL coat, Vaneli two tone pumps, Astrology bag (luxe version here)
By no means a new discovery for me, but it’s really reinforced that there’s nothing complicated about my style. As much as I’m happy to experiment, I’m most confident (and comfortable) in an outfit that is comprised of the basics. And… perhaps unapologetically, I’ve found myself reaching for denim on more days than not. I love a good style uniform, and this outfit comprises quite a few of my favourite pieces in my wardrobe at the minute. From the double faced cashmere coat (which is seriously a dream), to the charcoal two-tone flats (which just so happen to be my second pair from the brand), I adore how these items look combined, but also paired with the many other style heroes of my wardrobe.
STYLE NOTES
01 | Denim all day, every day
For a long time, I held a bit of an internal stigma about wearing denim so frequently, which has been mostly in part down to the fact that I share so many of my outfits online, and I’m hyper-aware of the fact that most people don’t have the luxury of wearing denim to the office. But for me, it’s all about how you style it. At the moment, I’ve been opting for Scandinavian-inspired looks, pairing denim with oversized knit sweaters, fuss-free flats and a big oversized coat. For the evening, I love to pair a slim fitting jean (these from RE/Done are my favourite) with a little silk cami, a well cut blazer (can’t go wrong with this style), and a low heeled pump.
I’ve been reaching for this high waisted skinny pair from Dr Denim a lot of late, which have been a great wardrobe workhorse over the years. Not only are they leg lengthening (winning!), but the denim is super soft with a lot of give, and they don’t stretch out with prolonged wear.
02 | Oversized knitwear FTW
And if I’m in denim, at the moment it’s typically paired with an oversized sweater, perhaps with a little tee worn underneath for good measure. Winter has well and truly arrived in Sydney, and this has become one of the biggest style heroes in my wardrobe to date. I managed to snap up this cream wool turtleneck from Joseph during the end of year sales, and while it was a bit of a splurge, it’s been well worth the investment. The fit is exactly what I was after, the wool is yet to pill or ball up, and the subtle ribbed detail down the arms and the centre of the back are eye-catching and what sets this apart from any other basic knit sweater. Because I do love a bit of variety – I’d rather not wear out my favourite pieces too quickly if I can avoid it – I’ve already added a couple of alternatives into the mix: this taupe coloured sweater with a dipped hemline from Assembly Label, and a grey oversized knit from H&M.
03 | Neutral colour palette
As much as I’ve been talking about stepping out of my ‘colour comfort zone’ of black, white and grey, I haven’t veered far. I’ve been pretty candid about the fact that I spent a lot of my late teens and early twenties experimenting with colour, and while I love the odd smattering of red here and there, I’m a neutrals girl at heart. This simple combination of black, cream and camel has to be one of my favourites – the cream sweater adds lightness to the outfit, while the camel coat warms up the look entirely.
