OOTD: Blue hues

Summer and Storm powder blue tiered dress

Maybe we can put it down to two years of pandemic fatigue, or perhaps it’s just a desire to break out of the mould of my current wardrobe. But… I’ve found myself inexplicably drawn to colour of late. It started with earthy tones; for my closet and personal style, a true natural progression from the core basics in my closet consisting mostly of black, white and grey.

Wearing Summer & Storm dress; Tibi sandals (on sale); Mango straw bag (old but I like this one)

Neutral tones, the basics. We know they’re a safe bet. You can spend a little more here, and generally feel some certainty in the longevity of that item in your wardrobe. But when you’re a little colour averse, like me, anything that sits outside those boundary lines is a gamble. Will I still be drawn to this item in six months, or a year from now? Will it be just as effortless to wear as my core closet staples? Can I justify the price from a cost-per-wear standpoint?

I suppose part of this comes from a craving or longing for something “new”. Which might explain how this little number ended up coming home with me last year, too. But also, the vibrancy; something that’s been sorely lacking in my closet until recently.

Anyway, let’s quickly talk about this outfit. It’s from one of my favourite Australian (childrenswear) brands to support: Summer and Storm. A spur of the moment purchase – an impulse buy in action – that I made in mid-2021. Though for me, it has a lot of elements I like. The modest neckline, puffed sleeves, tiered skirt, maxi length. But in a colour I normally would shy away from, a pale periwinkle blue. To keep it the hero of the outfit, I paired it with nude sandals and a simple straw basket bag. I also pulled my hair back to pull focus directly onto the dress.
