I thought I’d share a quick outfit post as the weekend comes to a close – in part, because it’s been a while since I shot what I was wearing in an ‘out and about’ setting. I wore this yesterday while we ran some errands – for me, maintaining my personal style while still feeling comfortable is really the key thing I look for when putting together an outfit, and this look seems to encapsulate the more relaxed vibe that I have been going for lately.
Wearing Grana wrap front top, ASOS mom jeans, Mute by JL cashmere coat, Everlane day heels, c/o Sometime ‘niko niko’ bucket bag, Mejuri zodiac necklace, Reliquia earrings, Linjer petite watch
I remember that there used to be a time when I only owned one pair of jeans, and my usual go to outfit during winter involved a pair of black opaque tights, worn with my favourite skirts or dresses of the moment. These days my off-duty looks are generally centred around the pair of denim I’m planning to wear; it’s a stark contrast but also serves as a good reminder that our style is always shifting and evolving. There were a few things that I loved about this look in particular, so let’s talk through the details…
STYLING NOTES
01 | The Bucket Bag
Let’s start by talking about a new addition to my wardrobe; the ‘niko niko’ bucket bag from Sometime. If you’re an OG reader of Mademoiselle, then you may recall that I during my first iteration of the 5PFW Challenge, I invested in a Mansur Gavriel bucket bag, which I later went on to sell. And you know, I haven’t stopped thinking about that bag since. So, I was pretty thrilled when Sometime reached out and asked if I’d like to style up their take on the bucket bag. I opted for a rich caramel colour, which pairs perfectly with my cashmere coat from Mute by JL, with muted gold hardware. It’s pretty roomy; I like the adjustable strap, the interior pockets, and the base shaper at the bottom of the bag. This style actually just so happens to be vegan (ie. faux) leather, which means it’s a lot more durable than the designer alternative (which scratched quite easily in my experience). It doesn’t have the same texture as leather – something I think is difficult to replicate, in any case – but aesthetically I think it looks really good, and I know it’s a bag I’m probably going to find myself reaching for quite a bit. My only real complaint is that there isn’t any glazing on the seam at the opening of the bag – aside from that, I’m very pleased with this addition to my wardrobe.
02 | Luxe fabrics
I put a lot of emphasis on investing in the classics, and there’s a few reasons why. Typically, we tend to reach for 20% of our wardrobe, 80% of the time, and more often than not, it’s going to be those timeless designs which don’t date. So, the frequency that we’re wearing the classics is generally higher than something a little more trend-led. The other reason? Because you’re wearing these pieces so much more often, intentionally purchasing something that is well made is so much more rewarding than opting for a budget alternative – nine times out of ten, if it’s a quality fabric that has been carefully designed and produced, it’s going to last the distance. For me, what this has meant is opting to go for higher quality fabrics like silk, organic or premium cotton, cashmere and baby merino wool and lived in french linens.
03 | Glove shoes
I’d say I’ve had my Everlane day heels for a good 12 months or so now, and they’re quite easily one of my most worn pairs of shoes, which has gotten me thinking… is it time to invest in the original glove shoe from Maryam Nassir Zadeh? I somehow managed to get my day heels half a size small, and have been thinking of picking up a second pair from the brand in my usual US 9.5, just to enhance the actual experience of wearing them, as despite having worn them in considerably, I find that the elasticated back digs into my heel after about 4-6 hours of wear. One other thing to note? I’m not sure if this is because they’re too small, but I’ve noticed that the heel now slips down the back of my foot, so I do have to be mindful and occasionally stop to pull it back into place.
For what it’s worth, I am the same shoe size as you, but I own the Everlane Day Heels in a 9.5 and I still have problems with them digging into my achilles heel. It only happens with one of the shoes though, so maybe it’s my foot? Anyway, just some food for thought in case you want to buy another pair!
