Packing for a short getaway to Wellington, New Zealand

packing suitcase travel short getaway overseas

Tomorrow afternoon I’ll be jetting across the Tasman for a short trip home, with nothing but spending time with my family, catching up with old friends, and exploring Wellington with a fresh set of eyes in mind. Given that I’ll only be away for 9 days, and the last thing I really want to be doing is rummaging through my suitcase for that pair of jeans I was so certain I’d packed, I’m planning on packing on the lighter side of things.

Spring time in Wellington is generally still pretty crisp, so I’ll be packing away a few jackets, cosy knit sweaters and denim to keep the cold at bay. Oh, and my Acne canada scarf – which doubles as an extra blanket while on the plane.

As usual, I’ve opted to pack fairly casually, choosing denim, loose fitting knits, and a sturdy pair of boots, the perfect accompaniment for navigating Wellington’s hilly streets. So with that in mind, and in an attempt to be practical, I’m leaving the heels at home, packing easily interchangeable separates, and limiting the stripes quota to just the one piece (because I always pack too many). In my suitcase you’ll find….

Outerwear
Acne mape black leather jacket

Knits
Country Road longline grey cardigan
Country Road black merino sweater (mens)
Karla Spetic black/white fuzzy sweater
Ashley Fogel grey cashmere jumper

Tops

T by Alexander Wang long sleeve stripe top
Kate Sylvester black merino turtleneck
Madewell ivory sweater
Everlane blush silk blouse
Uniqlo cream/black spot blouse
Acne white t-shirt

Glassons black muscle tank

Bottoms
Frame Denim indigo skinny jeans
J Brand white skinny jeans
Forever New black evie 7/8 trousers
ASOS camel pleated midi skirt
Acne black romantic skirt
Dion Lee grey thatch skirt

Shoes
Senso black suede paloma boots
Valentino blush rockstuds
Charlotte Olympia mauve virgo flats
Charlotte Olympia black velvet kitty flats

And with just enough space left in my suitcase for the odd treat, I’m hoping to pick up a little something special from one of my favourite Kiwi designers while I’m home, because when in Rome…

I always over pack no matter how short the trip and I admire you keeping things to a minimum. All great basics that you can totally mix and match. Lovin’ it all. Enjoy your trip! 🙂

I love everything in your set. So many beautiful items for fall. Where did that tote come from?

Currently packing for a trip to NZ! Only the South island though, but I’m basically copying your denim + knits + boots recipe 😉 Oh and plus some runners/sporty clothes of course for some probably freezing outdoor walks haha.
Any tips for places between CHC and Queenstown? (Not staying in Christchurch – just our arrival point. We’re driving around)

You might want to take a coat – a light down jacket (like the Uniqlo ones) if you can, as it’s still a little chilly. In Queenstown, there’s SO much to do. It’s really beautiful just walking around the lake. If you can, I’d try stopping at one of the wineries for an afternoon of wine ‘tasting’, and in the town there is the MOST incredible ice cream shop. The name escapes me but it is near where the steamboat is. There’s also a good seafood restaurant right there. OHHHH And you have to go to Fergburger. It always has really long queues but the burgers are among the best I’ve ever had. And make sure you go on the luge! It’s so much fun 🙂
