My reliance on muted, tonal outfits is really shining in this little collection of outfits. Definitely not a one trick pony, but I think when you know what works, it sticks. In particular as we’ve started to see the seeds of spring sprouting, I’ve felt this real desire to lean on a lighter colour palette.
This first outfit I wore just this week; head to toe tonal is right in my wheelhouse. The singular column of colour has the desired lengthening effect, but it’s really the textural components of this outfit that keeps things feeling interesting. The flecked, nubby texture of the knit draws the eye in as it’s not one singular flat surface. A faux pleated element to the skirt has this light-catching appeal and the vertical lines help to draw the eye downward. Then to really bring things home I opted for accessories which sat within the same colour family and undertone. As the bag is the deepest shade it brings a real richness and also acts as a bit of a focal point. That long and lean silhouette is underpinned by the proportions of the items I’m wearing too. Nothing that feels excessively oversized.

An all black outfit that feels anything but boring. All down to the introduction of texture, and that split detail of the skirt (which to me, carries this entire outfit). In the close up, you can really get a sense of what I mean when I say texture. The top I’m wearing is ribbed, and those ridges have this special way of catching the light. The skirt is a twill but reads flat by comparison. The actual silhouette is the element that is eye-catching to me. Finally the knit – which also acts as a third piece – is a faded black, and has these lighter flecks throughout adds in an element of softness. Because friction is always the key, I’ve juxtaposed some of those more dressed up, ladylike feminine components with a sporty sneaker. This helps to make things feel a bit more casual and “everyday”.

Even now, post-pandemic, in this more casual setting, the matching suit is a must in my closet. Easily toned down with a t-shirt or tank and some sneakers, or dressed up with a blouse and heels. A simple reminder that styling is key. This particular suit set is in a lighter pinstripe so I reflected that in the rest of my styling choices. A white tank & bag, and some creamy beige toned slides. The chain necklace acting as that final little touch of adornment and shine.

In the same way that we think about florals, pastels for spring aren’t exactly groundbreaking, but to me they often feel like a welcome shift from the higher contrast tones of A/W. This whole outfit was really centred around the mint green trousers. The key for wearing something outside your comfort zone? Opt for a basic you love and know well, and stick with the same undertone. This will help keep things feeling seamless but also familiar. For accessories I’ve layered up two dainty hearts for a subtle bit of adornment. I love the way that these two stack together – tres chic!
