I’ve been talking about giving Sezane a second chance for months now. My first order was a complete disaster, but having heard so many good things about the brand (from bloggers and also from many of you who shared your own experiences with me), I felt it was unfair to judge it purely based on the one shopping experience. The Spring/Summer collection didn’t really speak to me, but I was smitten with so many pieces from the Sezane Autumn 2019 drop. After sharing on Instagram that I’d actually placed a second order, I had a couple requests to do a clothing review on what I bought. I’ve had a good opportunity to wear the items I kept, as well as digest my thoughts on what I sent back, so I figured I’d break it down in today’s post.
This time I took a much more measured approach to my order. I checked the composition information for each item, and made note of any sustainable or ethical practices applied to the manufacturing of that piece. I also placed a slightly larger order than last time, to get a better sense of quality across styles. All up I purchased five items; three pieces of knitwear, a t-shirt, and a dress. Two I kept, and the remaining three I sent back. I will recommend if Sezane don’t offer free returns in your country (read their returns policy here), make sure you spring for tracking. It wasn’t until I supplied tracking for my return that I received my refund (more than a week after it had been received at their HQ). I’d also suggest printing out your order information and including this in the parcel. The returns process doesn’t seem to include this, and it’s an easy way to mark out what you are sending back and will serve as an order identifier.
WHAT I ORDERED FROM SEZANE AUTUMN 2019
Conrad T-Shirt in Light Grey Marl (size S) | KEPT
I started off my order with a safe bet; an organic cotton tee with a simple crew neckline. I’ve found myself reaching for more relaxed items like this, particularly as a layering piece during the transitional season, and I loved the soft flecked appearance of the grey hue. I opted for my usual size in t-shirts, a small, and I’m glad I did. It’s a relaxed, oversized kind of fit. Perfect for me to wear throughout much of my pregnancy. The cotton feels soft to the touch, and the weight of the fabric is substantial but not too thick. I will admit that it’s pretty pricey at $55 USD, but I’m happy to invest a little more in a good basic. This one has been through the wash already and looks the same as when I bought it. No twisted seams. A super reliable option, and it wouldn’t be a bad choice if you’re on the hunt for some basic tees. There’s some fun colours too!
Alceste Jumper in Navy (size S) | RETURNED
Despite the fact that we’re headed into summer, I couldn’t resist trying out some of the knitwear. What drew me to this cardigan were all the delicate, feminine details. I thought this would be a nice juxtaposition to the relaxed but sometimes undone nature of my jeans and skirts. It’s also made from 100% merino wool, which was a big drawcard for me. The quality of this cardigan was divine. Very soft, light airy feel to the fabric, the merino covered buttons were a nice touch, and I really liked the scalloped neckline. The sleeves have a fitted cuff at the wrist, which creates a beautiful balloon effect – especially if you push up your sleeves. What I hadn’t quite realised, was that there was a ribbed detail at the waist or hemline. The rest of the fit is very relaxed, and then you can this more fitted detail. I personally would have preferred if the cut was straight down. On me, it created a balloon effect at my waist, which isn’t very flattering on my body shape (even less so right now as my body is going through some big changes. If I was looking for something to wear exclusively with high waisted trousers/jeans/skirts, this would have been a winner. Aside from how it fit on me, I thought this was a gorgeous piece.
Chuck Jumper in Grey Marl (size S) | KEPT
The Chuck Jumper was really the item that pushed me to place this order. Never mind the fact that I have a fairly similar one in a cashmere rib knit. I was drawn to the cosy, fuzzy texture of the knit, and the braided-like detailing at the cuffs and collar. This to me is your classic winter knit. A simple crew-neck sweater, with a relaxed fit through the body. The fabric composition is a bit of a blend (not my preferred but I wanted to give it another go); 35% superkid mohair, 35% baby alpaca, and 30% polyamide. In my experience, mohair is generally quite itchy to the touch, but this is soft and not a single bit scratchy. To me that’s saying something as I tend to find my skin is quite sensitive. The grey is also a good neutral grey. It doesn’t pull too warm or too cool; it sits somewhere in the middle. I loved this so much I decided to keep it.
Achille Jumper in Marled Camel (size S) | RETURNED
This cardigan was my least favourite item from my whole order, and one I would suggest steering clear of. It reminded me a little of an & Other Stories cardigan from last year. Similarly to the Chuck Jumper, the Achille Jumper has that fuzzy-looking appearance, and I loved the rich camel colour. I knew the second I saw it in the box that it was impractical. It shed like crazy; there were fibres all over the box and on the other items I’d ordered. The hand feel wasn’t great. It has a mixed composition of 40% polyamide, 32% kid mohair and 28% merino wool. And then there was the fit. It cut off above the hip on me, and was just incredibly wide and boxy through the body. I didn’t bother tucking this into anything as I didn’t like the way it felt (or looked) on. Safe to say, returning this cardigan was a very easy decision.
Janice Dress in Black (size S) | RETURNED
The final item in my Sezane Autumn 2019 order was this sixties style mini dress. I loved the ribbed appearance of the fabric, the teardrop button closure at the nape of the neck, and the long sleeves. The composition pushed me over the line; 50% cotton and 50% merino wool. And in person, this is truly luxurious. The weight of the material is hefty, while it feels lovely and soft. Though again it was the style that just didn’t work for my body type. I’ve gone up a cup size already due to the pregnancy, and found I probably would have preferred how this looked if I had a slightly smaller chest. The sleeves on this dress are a little cropped, so I think if you’re petite, this would be a great autumn/winter option for you – especially if you were to layer it over a black turtleneck and tights for extra warmth. Ultimately, I decided to send this one back in the end.
FINAL THOUGHTS
So there you have it, everything I ordered from the Sezane Autumn 2019 Collection. I was so relieved to have had a much more uplifting and positive experience this time around with the items I picked, which says that being prudent and practical about your purchases will be what makes your order a hit or a miss. For me, the cost of returning items does make it quite prohibitive, and I’ve determined that I really have to be certain – or at least ordering quite a number of items – for it to be worth it. I hope you found this helpful if you’ve been planning to place an order yourself. If you have any other questions about the experience or want to share your own, please let me know in the comments section below! x
I love your honest reviews of Sezane, a brand that I also find tricky to get right (especially as a Canadian who doesn’t get free shipping/returns). Most of the sweaters I’ve purchased haven’t looked or felt nearly as nice as on the website. save for Gaspard and the merino/cashmere sweaters. But when it’s good, it’s good, and that website will pull me in every time. Just wondering if you took any photos of yourself in the Alceste? I find the website’s photos are so hard to gauge the look of the sweater on a human!

Thanks so much Kat. In my experience, the returns process can be pretty difficult (do you find it bizarre that they don’t supply you with a returns slip at all?), plus the cost makes it pretty prohibitive if you wanted to try the brand but are on a budget.
That’s been my experience too. I think the Chuck has a similar composition to the Gaspard – but it’s definitely been the nicest knitwear style I’ve tried from Sezane that has a synthetic component.
Sadly I didn’t take any photos and I regretted it the second I was asked to share this post. I found that the bottom ribbed section was quite fitted at the waist, which caused a balloon effect with the rest of the fabric. Having a long torso this really doesn’t work with my body shape. I’d gotten it with the intention of wearing it primarily as a sweater but I didn’t love how it looked open. A shame as it looks gorgeous on the model.
Thank you for your response! I am also long-torso’d so I may pass on it 🙂 And yes there are no return slips, and I find it interesting how disorganized the company is in terms of customer service and logistics (I’m not sure if you’ve witnessed the Archives mayhem of lost and cancelled orders). So far I’ve only purchased a Pierro this season and the camel Gaspard. I like some of the fun prints they come out with for Pierro, and it’s very comfortable. Looking forward to reading more of your posts, and I hope you enjoy early summer (as I head into winter…)

I have ordered from sezane half a dozen times and I have NEVER had a refund processed without emailing them to follow up (and then they will process it within 24 hours after the email). They are terrible at returns, whether this is purposeful or just poor management I couldn’t say.

It’s a shame that their returns process is so abysmal – I honestly would be fine with wearing the ridiculous Aussie post cost of returns if it weren’t for how frustrating it is to get them to acknowledge your parcel has arrived. I can’t imagine what would happen if you didn’t have tracking; when I thought I didn’t, they claimed my parcel never arrived! Then when I responded with it shortly after and noticed it had been at their warehouse a full week, I got my refund promptly.
