Last night, realisation set in that autumn is only a week away; at least by our Antipodean seasonal calendar. While I don’t expect temperatures to start cooling until sometime in late March or early April, my computer tabs would usually be heavy on autumnal pieces; chunky knits, new coats to lust after, black leather boots, scarves. Essentially my version of grasping at the opportunity to layer, well before it’s realistically feasible.

Likely a side effect of my low buy, but I haven’t felt that nagging desire to pen a seasonal wishlist. I’d usually use this as a chance to be more specific about my “wants” for my closet. A running list I keep in my phone, replete with designers I’d like to maybe buy from.
And if my latest YouTube video is anything to go by, it’s that my taste – at least in individual pieces – hasn’t changed. It’s the silhouette that has. The colour combination. Instead, the focus has shifted from what I’m wearing, to how I’m wearing it. How can I modernise my “go-to” look, while still feeling like myself. While still retaining the overall essence of my personal style.
While trends aren’t something I often discuss, they still play a minor role in how my preferences have shifted each season. And for this A/W, it’s all centred around colour. A rich, cocoa brown. I first noticed it when I made a last minute Black Friday weekend sale purchase last year (a Rejina Pyo bag). Evident again in some sandals from Tibi that I’d had my eye on. A linen tee I bought from H&M. Some Among shorts I’d purchased last summer. Just to name a few.
Slowly what was emerging was a lean towards adding in this very neutral, and very classic colour to my closet. Built up over time in a way that I barely noticed. The elephant in the room here is that this chocolate hue is trending. Whether conscious or not, I’ve found myself leaning into this aspect of the current fashion zeitgeist. And it’s felt natural; an extension of my personal style, and the direction my closet is going in. The colour is classic, timeless, and easily mixed and matched with the bulk of my closet.
All of this is to say that, don’t be surprised if you see me sporting head-to-toe cocoa brown looks in the months to come. But in those same silhouettes I’ve been leaning on of late.
Not much of a shift, but something I wanted to highlight all the same. And it felt fitting, to wrap up this seasonal style rambling with my favourite cocoa brown picks from across the web. Curious to know how – or whether – you’ll be giving your style a refresh for the season ahead…!
