Getting dressed every morning tends to follow a formula with me. Oversized knit + slim pants + pointed toe shoes. Fitted tank + mini skirt + longline cardigan. Off shoulder top + high waisted culottes + slides. And rules. There are always rules. Style tips and tricks I’ve been stashing up my sleeve over the years. But the one rule I’ll always, always break? Pairing navy and black together.
Wearing Miere the Label organic cotton knit sweater (size S worn here); Arket cropped trousers (use code “EXTRA20” for an additional 20% off sale items); Oliver Cabell dream flats; Linjer Lana bag
Personally, I love the combination. I’ve always been drawn to it, and love the subtleties in colour that you get in tones. Particularly when wearing a deep, almost midnight navy. Above, I thought I’d share the simplest way to style black and navy together. Going monochrome for the outfit, and bookending it with matching accessories.
In this instance, I’ve opted for navy style essentials. An organic cotton knit from my newly launched (mostly childrenswear) brand, mÄ«ere. I’m wearing the size S here, which you can see has a relaxed fit on me. It’s relatively lightweight though, which makes it perfect for tucking, without adding bulk around the waist. My husband also has this knit but in the size L – the broader shoulders make this a good unisex option.
The trousers are from Arket; one of my best sale purchases of the past year, which I now have in both a deep forest green, and the navy pictured above. I love that these have a cropped length through the leg, and tabs at the waist to adjust/personalise the fit. They’re currently on sale for $21 USD, with an additional 20% off at checkout using the code “EXTRA20”.
Then I went all black with my accessories. I find that this is a softer approach to pairing the two colours together. Visually, the outfit almost looks monochrome; exactly what I was aiming for here. My shoes are the dream flats from Oliver Cabell – quite possibly the comfiest pair of ballet flats I’ve ever owned. I loved that this added a feminine element to the outfit.
As a final juxtaposition, my bag – Linjer’s Lana bag – is on the smaller end of the spectrum, while also having a semi-structured shape. I feel like this adds some additional balance, and doesn’t compete with the larger, more relaxed silhouette of my outfit.
