Currently on countdown to summer break (and crossing fingers for more sunshine), and thought I’d share a few of my summer wardrobe staples that I’ve been wearing on repeat. I’ve found seasonally, I tend to gravitate towards a handful of staples. It’s what I’ve started to reflect on as being something of a capsule. Supplemented by bursts of colour, print, and the odd trend (when I finally decide to dip my toe in). This outfit encapsulates four key pieces I’ve been wearing a lot; naturally, felt like a good place to start.
Wearing Tibi peplum top; Madewell shorts; Dune sandals; Loewe basket bag; Mejuri necklace; Rosefield watch
01 | THE PEPLUM TOP
Starting with an element of playfulness. A bit of whimsy. Something that has long held a presence in my closet. In the past, through wearing my Charlotte Olympia kitty flats. These days, a little riff on a peplum seems to be the key. A lot of my outfits lately have started with this key piece. It largely leans into my preference for more relaxed silhouettes, as the tops I have aren’t necessarily fitted too close to the body. But they retain a femininity through the ruffled peplum hem. A pretty detail which adds some friction to the outfit. Given I wear so many high-waisted shorts and pants, it’s the perfect pairing to highlight the waist without showing any skin.
02 | HIGH WAISTED SHORTS
As prefaced, high-waisted anything has become a huge part of my style repertoire for 2021. And I’m not mad about it. I have a long torso, so it’s a way I’ve always like to create visual balance. For summer, it’s all about high waisted shorts. Denim, cotton, linen. You name it. I especially like when they have some texture to them. This particular pair has a subtle herringbone imprint; a detail I’ve noticed coming through in a number of other shorts I own. The rope tie waist is cute, too.
03 | SLIDE SANDALS
It’s not summer without my slides. Since adding a dupe for the YSL tribute slides to my closet a few years back, these have become my shoe style of choice. I’m still staying faithful to my tributes, but a newcomer to the rotation are these warm tan slides from Dune. These are a great dupe for… you guessed it, the Hermes Oran sandals. And they’re just as comfortable as they look. The reason why I find myself gravitating to this style is the ease of wear, plus they seem to add balance regardless of whether I’m wearing a mini or a maxi on my lower half.
04 | STRAW BAGS
Again, one of those perennial favourites come summer time. The straw bag. Mine got a bit of an upgrade this year, and I really have come to appreciate the crispness of the white leather patch detail. For me, these scream summer. A larger style is great if you want it to work as your throw-it-all-in-and-go, but I love a petite option for day to day. It fits the essentials, but adds a sense of holiday to the outfit. Even if you’re just popping out for a quick grocery shop.
