Winter’s over here in Sydney, but I’m still mulling over my best – and most loved – cold weather wardrobe additions. From a planning perspective it just makes sense. In nine months’ time the winter of 2021 will feel like a distant memory, so making notes now means I have a better chance of shopping smarter next season. And up today, is a closer look at The Curated Boyfriend Coat.

I’d say of all my outerwear, my coats from The Curated tend to draw the most enquiries. Understandable when you’re shopping from an online-only retailer. So, I hope that this detail review, plus an update on wear and tear after a season of (almost) daily use, will be helpful!

THE CURATED BOYFRIEND COAT REVIEW
Alright… let’s get into the nitty gritty!
SIZING + FIT | My most asked question is generally around how sizing for The Curated Boyfriend Coat compares to their Classic Coat (review). Personally, I’d describe it as more of a relaxed, Scandinavian fit. Think more drape, and more fabric through the sleeves and body. Great if you like that nonchalant, oversized fit. Plus, incredibly convenient if you wear a lot of bulky knits; the armholes are very generous, which has made this a no-brainer for me on days where I want to be super bundled up.
Unlike the Classic Coat where I’d recommend sticking to your usual size, I do think you have some flexibility here. I am a true AU8/US4 and I wear the size S. For me, it’s a perfect relaxed fit. I’m 172cm tall for height reference. If you’re more petite, you may like to stick with the Classic Coat, or potentially consider going down a size to avoid being swamped by fabric. Also, you could go up or down a size depending on desired fit. Super slouchy, or a little closer cut to the figure (while maintaining that ease and drape).
QUALITY + DESIGN | By far one thing I’ve come to expect from The Curated is quality. And their coats, which have been reworked since the brand originally launched, truly hold up. The cashmere and merino wool blend feels luscious and luxurious. As someone with sensitive skin, I can attest that it’s not itchy at all. In the images above, I’m very comfortably wearing just a simple tee underneath the coat.
The style is a simple wrap coat, with two large patch pockets at the hips. I love the oversized nature of the pockets, as they conveniently fit my iPhone 11 Pro Max, key holder, and a small card wallet. My only niggle – which I’ve mentioned previously – is that the coat has no belt loops. This is reflective of the fact that we’re all built differently; where my natural waist, as someone who is “taller” and has a long torso, will sit in a different position to someone who is petite with a shorter torso. It does mean if you plan to belt/unbelt the coat, you might like to wear a slightly larger bag to accommodate so you have somewhere to tuck it when it’s not being worn.
STYLING | I’m sure you don’t need any tips on styling, especially with a coat this classic. But I did want to touch briefly on wearing this coat. And more specifically, how I’ve been wearing it. Firstly, the colour; charcoal. I’ve found this to be incredibly versatile as it pulls true neutral. It works both with warmer and cooler colour palettes in my closet. Just another reason why I’ve worn it so much.
Given the relaxed nature of The Curated Boyfriend Coat, I tend to wear it most with denim looks, or when I’m trying to create balance in an outfit. This could be via the silhouette, or to tone down dressed up elements. If I’m feeling particularly sassy, it looks incredible belted at the waist with this double belt from Alexander McQueen. For me, it’s the versatility. It feels effortless, and combines both casual details (the silhouette) with elevated elements (the luxe fabric).
WEAR + TEAR | And finally, a quick note on wear and tear. Which is to say, there is none. By the numbers, this was my most worn winter jacket, and there isn’t a single hint of pilling. The fabric looks the same as when I first added it to my closet, and there’s not a single mark.
I hope for those of you looking at this coat, this is helpful. If you have any further questions which might not be answered in my review above, then please feel free to ask them in the comments below! xx
Please note that this coat was gifted to me for styling purposes, but all thoughts and feedback are my own.

Hi Amanda – so exciting. It’s a beautiful coat and honestly I don’t think you can go wrong. I have the classic coat in camel and the boyfriend in charcoal and while they are different styles, I find the charcoal is such a no brainer and super easy to style. It’s been my most worn coat two years running. We are similar heights. I’m 5’8″ and an AU8. I wear the size small. I think the small would be totally fine on you too as it is a generous cut being more of a “boyfriend” style xx
