Karen Walker ‘take change’ dress

If there’s one thing that seems to pop up on every ‘wardrobe essentials’ list I’ve ever come across, it’s the little black dress, and it isn’t without reason.

Aside from being the perfect – and simplest – option for special occasions, the right LBD can do double or even triple duty for the office, and lazy weekends at home. My personal favourite is this black backless number from Karen Walker that I picked up a couple of years ago, and it’s usually the first thing I reach for when I’m stumped about what to wear. It’s perfect for the weekend, worn casually with a cute pair of flats; for the office, with a skivvy or a crisp white shirt underneath; or for a night out, with a longline cardigan and a vertiginous pair of heels.

If you haven’t caught up with my essentials series yet, I’ve been sharing how to wear each of my wardrobe essentials three ways, and you can catch how I like to wear my little black dress here. For the uninitiated, it’s the only dress you’ll ever really need (although options do make for more fun!). And given that one little black dress is never enough, I’ve picked out some of my personal favourites which you can shop below! x

Hey! I love this post and the multiple ways you wore it in the video 🙂 on an unrelated note – your Q&A video is great! I’m barely even a youtube watcher, but I always watch yours! On that note, I was so glad to hear you wouldn’t quit your day job to become a pro blogger/vlogger. So many of the bloggers I used to like did this and I feel they (mostly, not all) become fake and unrelatable. ALSO (sorry, so much to say!!) nice choice on wedding dress designer if I’ve guessed correctly 😉 I wore the “orchid” from the same brand for my wedding last September and I would choose it 100x again. I then wore a short red one for the reception because of the beautiful train, which is also a decision i’d repeat! Hope the planning is going well, so much excitement… Steph x

Thanks Steph! And really appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos – I know you must be SO busy 🙂 I think one of the things that my family instilled in me growing up was a sense of hard work, and I think that once a lot of b/vloggers go full time, their perception of what this is – though not for all that do – changes over time. I think if anything, I’d consider cutting back to 4 days a week. Blair Eadie I think does it best (although she’s fortunate that she doesn’t actually write anything to go along with her posts!) in that she has an incredible full time yet still maintains a good standard for her blog. Ahh sorry for the long comment on it, I think I could go on about it for hours haha.

And yes, you’re completely right! I saw your wedding snaps and you looked absolutely gorgeous!! I actually started to regret my own choice and wanted to pick up the orchid. Did you wear the serpent for your reception? I ended up going with one from Carla Zampatti as I figured I wouldn’t have any other opportunity to wear something like it! 🙂 xx

Hey! Yes I love Blair Eadie and its awesome that what she wears is what she is REALLY wearing that day (or at least that’s how it seems). As in, inspirational but real at the same time.

Oh I love CZ, her dresses are soo flattering and feminine, I totally support that choice haha! Can’t wait to see which one you chose. My reception dress was the red mini warrior which was great for my purposes and fit in with the chinese traditional wedding colour 🙂 (a la husband’s family) also saved my wedding dress train from being ruined…

Your wedding sounds like it’s going to be divine from the details you’ve shared so far, and your style in general, I hope you’re feeling chilled about it as much as possible! xx

I totally agree! I definitely think she’s a great example of more realistic outfits.

Ohhh gorgeous! That dress is just lovely you would have looked beautiful. What are you doing with your dress now that the wedding is over? I’m hoping to pull the train up on mine and turn it into a bustle so I can wear it again as a cocktail dress. Wishful thinking maybe… xx

This dress is ah-mazing! You look gorgeous in.

LBDs are definitely an invest piece and an essential. Totally agree with how versatile they are. x

Thank you so much Emma! This one in particular has been a fave of mine just as I can slip a sweater underneath and it automatically becomes office appropriate! 🙂

This dress is perfect – and very becoming on you – too bad it is no longer available. If you come across something similar, will you please share? Take care!

I definitely will! I have seen it come up a couple of times on Trade Me (NZ) and occasionally on eBay too so if you have a search saved you might be able to come across one x
