A handful of the A/W staples I have on heavy rotation? A great knit, some tailored trousers, and a trusty pair of chelsea boots. The latter being one of my OG core wardrobe heroes, dating back to my early twenties. When you know, you know.

For some notes on the items I’m wearing… starting with the knit sweater. There are three major players when it comes to knitwear in my wardrobe; merino wool, cashmere, and cotton. I have sensitive skin so try to avoid anything too rough or scratchy. This knit is predominantly cotton, with 5% cashmere blended in which gives the fabric a smooth and ever-so-slightly plush hand feel. A nice option if you typically would avoid wool knits as there isn’t an iota of scratchiness when worn. I would say this fits true to size, for a boxy and relaxed fit. Slightly wide through the body, with a slimmer cut through the sleeve. A decent weight, so best for a front tuck I find.

The pants are a cotton sateen, made with organically grown cotton. What I like about cotton sateen is that it has a slight sheen to it; subtle, yet effective, especially if you’re on the hunt for a trouser that can straddle both your work and weekend wardrobe. Again I took my usual size, an AU8. The waist measurement is the only part of this pant which is “fitted”, there’s a fair amount of give and ease across the hips. This means that you can easily wear these over a pair of heat tech or thermal leggings if it’s especially cold. Inseam is very long, so much so that I’m wearing them with cuffed and folded (inwards – you can use trouser tape!). Being made from cotton, it’s reasonable to expect that they will show creases, it’s all part of the look. I’d recommend these trousers from Uniqlo if you want something that is essentially wrinkle-proof.

Good boots are something I’m always on the hunt for as they’re such a solid MVP during the colder months. I’ve been pretty impressed with this pair from AERE. With a high shaft, and very low heel, they’re a top contender for daily wear. Paired with cropped trousers you can feel pretty confident that you won’t have a sliver of skin showing – I like to wear them with high socks to add an extra layer of warmth. What’s really blown me away is just how comfortable they are. Straight out of the box (!!). The leather is really soft which I am loving (though it does mean you can expect creases across the foot and near the ankle to show up pretty quick!). I have a wide foot and have found these so accommodating across the foot. No pinching, and if anything, I do have a little bit of room width-wise. There’s also some space at the toe, too. If you have a narrow foot, taking these things into consideration I’d maybe size down. I took my usual size AU9.

Ending this post with a sale PSA; The Iconic are currently holding their very first clearance event, with up to 60% off! Well worth a little look, especially if you’re still missing a couple key pieces for the season. Or… want to try and snap up a bargain or two for spring – no harm in thinking ahead!
