Carrying on from my recent post all about wardrobe heroes, second up on the list is a good pair of straight leg jeans. It’s a far departure from my previous denim uniform which consisted solely of mid-rise or high-rise skinny styles (I’m a creature of habit.. what can I say?!), but I’ve been enjoying the introduction of a new silhouette to my weekly outfit repertoire.

Wearing Assembly label roll knit sweater (similar), Everlane cheeky straight leg jeans (full review here), Maryam Nassir Zadeh sophie sandals (in mint green here and a high street dupe is here), Everlane day market tote (affordable alternative), c/o Sarah van Oosterom leather belt, Linjer watch, Mejuri earrings (also love these)

The biggest thing for me was trying to nail just exactly how to pair this style. A skinny jean is easy; it pairs effortlessly with fitted or loose styles, and my past experience has taught me that a straight leg jean required a little more effort to get the balance right.

What it really took was the right pair of jeans; which for me just so happened to be the cheeky straight leg jean from Everlane. I wouldn’t class these as a classic straight leg, mostly because they taper in slightly at the ankle, which has a flattering effect on the ankle. They also strike the right balance of being fitted but not too fitted around the thigh – note that these do stretch out with wear to have that perfectly lived in feel, and slightly baggy look.

Styling Tips

01 | Belt it up
Adding a bit of definition at the waist is one of my key tips for wearing a straight leg jean. It gives a bit of structure to the silhouette and stops a more relaxed outfit from looking too ‘sloppy’. The newest addition to my growing belt collection is from Melbourne based designer Sarah van Oosterom. I opted for the standard belt in the chocolate leather with silver hardware; I love the medium width, and the belt is cut so that it can be worn both on the waist or on the hip – a massive winner for me as I love a good wardrobe staple that can do double duty.

02 | Go for the classics
I find that as a straight leg tends to skew a little more casual, it pairs best with the classics. In this outfit I’ve gone for a couple of my favourites: an oversized knit sweater, a simple sandal, and a leather tote bag. For a more ‘Parisian’ vibe, I love how these jeans look with a breton striped top, and they look great with a tee and blazer combo that’s dressed up with some strappy sandals or black court shoes.
